Reading 1-0 West Ham United

We won !!

Finally Reading manage their second win of the campaign, in difficult circumstances.

Our match with West Ham had many people assuming a home win, given our results in recent history against the Hammers, but it would be as crucial as many recent results. Last season we were a thorn in their season on many levels, history.

Today as we approached the Madstad for the second time this week, the heavens were once again fully open, ensuring all approaching fans got a soaking before the match. As it did at home to Swansea City.

As with all fixtures at the Madstad, the away end would be full today. This is defiantly a stadium that welcomes and attracts away fans, so a cup tie atmosphere was expected.

Panoramic view

The game began in a frenetic manner, Reading were up for this, and showed their intentions from the start by closing down higher up the pitch. West Ham made their intentions clear, Kebe was a target, a heavy challenge a sly kick from O'Brien proved they held a grudge, and felt there was some unfinished business with Kebe, making it personal. This proved to be the case for most of the match, unfortunately the ref did nothing to protect him.

With five minutes on the clock, a forward pass from Harte was not controlled by Pogrebnyak. Collinson collected the ball and attempted to pass the ball back, but miss-controlled his pass. Pogrebnyak seized upon the under hit pass and strode into the box with the ball at his feet. No need to get excited he buggered up an opportunity against SCFC on Wednesday. That was a dress rehearsal, confidently he held off the pursuing Collinson to slot the ball into the net. Goal, cue music and wild celebrations.

The goal removed some of the pressure, but the game remained nigly, heavy challenges, feigning of tackles. The ref failed to deal with some poor tactics from a typical Allerdyce team. (The sight of Mark Noble diving to win a free kick, when it was clear the was no touch, showed how low West Ham have stooped under Allerdyce. West Ham used to be known and respected as the Aristocrats of football, now but a distant memory)

Reading needed to soak up a lot of pressure towards the later stages of the first half, but ended the half buoyant and relishing the challenge.

The second half began as the first had ended, but with one notable difference, Reading had started to slip deeper into defence, tactics that could prove to be an error. More challenges were being questioned, with even stranger calls from the referee, on more than one occasion the person putting the ball into touch was rewarded with a goal kick or throw-in for their team. Mr Oliver dressed in black would not be leaving the ground with any extra friends. Either he genuinely failed to spot what was going on in front of his eyes, or he was choosing to ignore, thus not having to make a decision.

The list of West Ham players attracting the displeasure of the East stand was growing, Nolan & Noble, was joined by Carlton Cole. He had left Chris Gunter lying prone on the floor face down, and as play continued the frustrations of the crowd was ventilated more vociferously, until Gunter got to his feet, TV replays showed Carlton Cole had only stepped on him three times, now you can't call that accidental.

One goal lead in a game like this never seems enough, and as the cross dropped on to the head of Vaz-te his glancing header was to be decisive, it went wide.

A rousing cheer of relief from the Royals fans was fuelled by the giant screen replaying the crucial miss time and time again, much to the amusement of the Reading fans.

Chances for Reading were very few in the second half, the most notable was when Jobi McAnuff cut inside to set up Karacan on the edge of the eighteen yard box for his shot to cannon off the bar.

Reading were content to play counter attack football, and take the ball into the corners, and run down the clock. Kebe had left the field of play a Reading hero, not only had he survived the aggressive repercussions for "pulling up his socks" but had maintained his dignity to give Reading a sterling defencive performance, and assisting with breaking out of defence with controlled possession. He took the longest slowest walk across the pitch to a standing ovation, and the crowd singing "He's Jimmy Kebe, he does what he wants!"

What could big Sam do? Signal to the ref indicating he was taking too long to leave the field of play. It was Jimmy's way of sticking two fingers up to Big Fat Sam and his Claret and Blue Army.

Jimmy did it on the pitch and with dignity, for his all round performance today amongst stiff competition he was my man of the match.

Even with the four minutes of added time, Reading had done enough, they had won. Urzz

As the cheers rang out around the stadium, you had to wonder how did WHUFC end the match with eleven players still on the pitch.

No moaning or bickering here today about Reading or any individuals, an old friend had returned, just like against Newcastle earlier in the season. All those wearing and supporting the blue and white hoops played their part today and should enjoy the feeling.

A bit of optimism returns to the Madstad, the side does still need strengthening in January, time for AZ to show how deep his ambition is, if he believes in McDermott, back him in the transfer window.

Reading 0-0 Swansea City

Well Christmas done, time to watch the Royals take on Swansea City, Boxing day matches are always difficult to predict. On the way to the match the heavens once again opened up, so we were in for a wet soggy afternoon. Little fear of the match being abandoned, have only ever seen this once at the Madstad, when it was abandoned at half time against Leicester City.

Revenge for the defeat at Wembley, no longer applicable, we had enough on our plate without concerning ourselves with that baggage.

Nice to see a couple of familiar faces in the starting line up, especially Jem Karacan and Danny Guthrie.

So it began, as the rain continued, on the stroke of 3 o'clock the shrill of the whistle set the game alight.

When I say it set the game alight, that was a vast exaggeration, apart from a strong penalty claim for the Royals, and some wayward shooting from Swansea, our fayre for the first half was to watch Swansea stroke the ball around with no end product. Now if that was not boring enough, on the rare occasion we did get the ball, we gave it straight back, so they could do it all again. To be honest it is mind numbing to sit and watch.

On a rare occasion after a few passes the Pog was striding into the penalty area from the right, a heavy touch put the ball ahead of him, what does he do, stop, put his hands to his head in frustration, then realise there is still a chance to get the ball. By the time he realises, the moment is gone and the ball is gathered gratefully by the Swansea keeper. Groans echoed around the ground, and so it continued until the half time whistle, met by muted boo's and deafening silence.

Surely this had to change, not one worthy effort could be recalled for either keeper to deal with, do we want to stay in this league, on that showing, we may want to, but the term "snowball in hell's chance" springs to mind.

For 15 minutes in the second half the balance swung even further in favour of Swansea, time to make changes, off went the "Pog" and Captain McAnuff on come Alfie and Hal Robson Kanu, finally the team were showing some fight and ambition, sadly Leigertwood remained on the pitch to ensure Swansea regained possession, honestly that bloke couldn't pass wind!

The (New) Reading Way (Hope not!)

As the ball struck the back of the net many around me were in raptures, up off their seats celebrating Alfie putting the ball in the net. Not me!

Firstly and most importantly I am and always have been a fan of Reading Football Club, who do things the right way, and in my eyes are honest and above board.

I watched as Alfie rose to pat the ball into the back of the net with his left hand, and sat feeling disgusted that my beloved team had resorted to "cheating"

I was glad to see that not only did the ref rule the goal out, but produce a yellow card for the offence.

Alfie had become a cult hero at the club, akin to Jamie Cureton, but in my eyes it is no longer a comparison.

What makes this worse is the after match press conference where McDermott tried to make light of the situation by referring back to a goal by Demba Ba for Newcastle, and saying goals like that normally count at the Madstad. Shocking! Alfie should be fined a months wages for the offence, and another weeks wages for being caught in the act.

Back to the game; the match was now a contest and both teams going for a win, end to end football, terrific saves from Federici and at the other end a superb volley from Alfie was cleared off the line.At last some oohs and aaghs from the crowd.

One of the biggest cheers was saved for the recently recalled Alex Pearce who somehow managed to put a ball out for a throw in a yard from the touchline. The reason being, that it travelled off the field of play the necessary one yard for a clearance but went skywards sailing up onto the roof of the East stand and out of the ground, possibly the first time this feat has been achieved in the time Reading have called this home.

So the game concluded nils a piece and one point meant Reading leapfrogged QPR.

Final note; Reading please cut out any inclinations of cheating, whatever league we are in this team represents our town, if we get relegated honourably so be it. Emotions are running high at the moment, but dignity must be retained above all.

Manchester City 1-0 Reading

Well another defeat, but not as heavy as expected.
BM said he was gutted, as he felt the team deserved a point after an injury time goal won the game for city.

Once again we got beat and our losing run continues if they do not pick up two wins at home, there would be no point in entering the transfer window spending money it will be wasted.

The team and Manager surely have entered the last chance saloon, but will they get served?

Reading 2 - 5 Arsenal

For those that thought it could not get any worse, than going bottom of the league on Saturday.

It just did!

Dropped the wife off and drove home in time to watch the match on Sky Sports, just as Gary Neville was analysing the teams and formations. To those that ever doubted Gary's ability, do yourself a favour and look it up. He got it spot on, I doff my cap to you Gary, you were spot on with how we would have no chance in midfield, and almost to a tee described how Arsenal would score their first two goals.

A word that is banded about more and more of late is "embarrassment" and that is an understatement.

Rubbish formation, tactics and no team spirit, and the off the field battles continue, with no end in sight.

I was amazed that we pulled two goals back, and no sooner had Kebe scooped the ball out of the net and ran to the half way line to restart and go again, he was substituted, the one player that was causing Arsenal any problems aside Alfie, surely not another injury, from that point on I was beyond caring, put the coat on and went out to the car to go and fetch the wife from the football mecca Madstad. As I was driving along Radio Berkshire announced the score was now five to the Arsenal, once again frustration was replaced with despair.

Reading fans have been patient with the owner's and Managers in recent past, but they are now being mugged off big time.

How did Brian McDermot justify our position, "You have to remember three years ago when I took over the club they were heading for Division One" Well Brian that might be your idea of justification but it sure in hell isn't mine.

We were told the new owners had big ideas, plans to take the club forward and establish them as a top ten side, well that is not going to happen anytime soon.

My one bit of advice to Brian McDermot is do not even try to justify or defend this inept team and football club. Previously I had concerns over your tactics but do not try to make a mug out of the fans, they don't deserve it. The notes that you are seen writing down after each goal should be thrown away and face up to what is staring you in the face, you got it wrong, you carry on getting it wrong and you are learning nothing. With each performance this team is being hung out to dry.

My final bit of advice to the new owner AZ, please remind us of your intentions for this club.

Sold down the river by JM, expect now for the fans to express their support in a negative way to reflect the utter shite being dished out.

Bottom of the league Readingfc

Houston we have landed, we have a problem.

Well it has been coming for a while now but Readingfc have now secured our rightful spot at the bottom of the table, what an utter shambles this club has become.

They were so poor against Southampton and Sunderland, it was not even worthy of writing about, for the record we did not score in either game, but travelling south we conceded just the one but three times as many in the North East.

QPR won their first game yesterday to near rivals Fulham, (Fulham never do us any favours, but why should they) thus placing us firmly at the foot of the table.

The achievements and impact we made at our last visit to the premiership could not have prepared us for the shambolic position we find ourselves in.

Daily now we are hearing of rifts in the team and between players and manager, the new owners have gone very very quiet.

I don't have the answers because i do not know all that is going on but, we currently would have to over achieve just to produce the basics, our tactics worked last season, let the other team have the ball and do whatever they want with it, we will simply play counter attack football through the channels and the wings.

Not exactly new news, but it doesn't work against quality sides, to be honest there was recorded a more spirited performance by the band on the Titanic, God rest their souls.

All I hope for Christmas is friends and relatives do not buy my presents from Readingfc Megastore!!

Monday night we take on Arsenal, my wife and I take it turns to go in the week, one of us always stays at home to look after our German Shepherd Blue.

It was a tough fought battle as to who goes, but I won, Sue has to go!!

The overriding factor was that I had already seen us play the Arsenal for 45 minutes at the Madstad in the "Whateveryouwanttocallitthisyearleaguecup". So my time has been served.

I hope that whatever the problems are, they are sorted so that even when we are relegated we can go without shame or embarrassment. For now it is merely a question of not if but when.

One solution to prevent Arsenal scoring seven against us is to secure the shutters, batten down the hatches, and don't let them in the ground on Monday night. (We would still probably fail to secure victory)

Defence against Arsenal

Still worse things happen in life, you could have been brought up supporting Swindon Town or Oxford United.

Reading 3 - 4 Manchester United

The Royals were taking on the top of the league Manchester United, an evening kick off for the sake of ESPN to show on TV.

Given our performance against Aston Villa, who knows what the score would be and how it would come across on the TV.

So with a 5.30 pm kick off what little warmth there was from the sun during the day had already disappeared before taking up the customary seat in the lower west stand.

All the usual pre-match hype was all done and dusted as we waited for the teams to enter the field of play, now in my mind, this was going to be a match to savour, forget about winning just compete was the phrase rattling round in my head, just compete please.

As the teams entered the field to a rapturous roar, from both sets of fans, our league position had now been put to one side for 90 minutes, all our woes and troubles did not mean a jot. The match kicked off and from both sides it was a thoroughly entertaining encounter, action all the way, to summarise how do you begin to describe a game where by half time you have seen Reading take the lead twice, scoring three goals but conceding four, without one that by all accounts crossed the line but was not given. A penalty which was almost so comical it was like our defence had the mindset of the keystone cops.

Ferguson was left to substitute his right back, after being skinned more times than a Fyffes banana, really although he only received a yellow card, he was lucky it was not his second, so Rafael was substituted and left the field not a happy bunny, strop of the day.

Now whatever Reading achieve this season to have scored three goals against Manchester United within 23 minutes of play has to merit recording some sort of record, just a shame that we were to concede four in 34 minutes.

Finally the half was brought to a close, remaining at 3-4, but we were still in the game.

The second half came and unlike the Arsenal game there were to be no further goals, but entertaining all the same, chances at both ends.

Now I went to the game to be positive and I am going to share one moment of utter frustration, his name is Adam Federici, some of his antics and performances of late have been shocking, he is in the side due to the injury of Alex McCarthy, forgiven for all those previous misdemeanours, including being beaten at his near post by Anderson in the 13th minute. But for all in the world that is holy, what was that lunatic doing trying to dribble around Robin Van Persie.

If I were the Manager he would have been taken off the field of play, and never seen first team action again as a player for Reading FC. We were already struggling to deal with a team that was top of the league, who were leading by one goal and sympathy from the man in black favoured those in red, so he tries to dribble around RVP, absolute lunatic, is my honest opinion.

The goalless second half was concluded and the score remained as it did the end of the first, once again Reading were defeated. Note I said defeated and not losers, because losers they are not.

Somehow it seems inevitable that we will be relegated, but life will go on, and matches like we watched today are what is great about being in the Premier league, unfortunately the tables that record our progress, reflect the other side that in the cold light of day is based on facts, not how you feel.

One final thought to share, I heard that the match was the lead on Match of the Day, a programme I gave up on a few seasons back, it does very little to provide an in depth unbias reflection of the football of that day, no longer my cup of tea.

So of an official crowd of 24,095 this Royals fan went home very content with watching a terrific game of football, and thinking how close we came from winning or loosing by a larger margin, the score line was fair.

Aston Villa 1 - 0 Reading

So this was the night to put matters right, we were looking to right a lot of wrongs at Villa Park.

Well that did not happen, familiar story same result as our history has laid out, no win, worse of all not even a clean sheet which could of earned at least one point from a sorry game.

The line ups were looking promising at the start and watching on Sky Sports, all the action could be observed and highlights analysed at the end of the match.

Highlights could have been written on the back of a stamp there were so few, actually there was only one, and that was for Villa scoring their winning goal.

We were beaten by a very poor Villa side, which says more about us than them. They have an excuse young side, new manager etc etc. Our excuses have now run out. Forget about luck, rub of the green, players out injured, all I can see is we did well to get nil.

Pressure and stress at work can manifest itself in many ways, but whatever form it takes you have to deal with it. Reading ain't.

The whole sorry saga has now been there for the world to see,  though a lot of people would of shut the TV off or moved to another channel after 20 minutes of dire football.

Reading fans are hurting really bad now, and like the majority of them, you watch with concern and worry, even the basics are a level we could not hope to achieve without a sherpa to guide us up to such heights. Many choose social media websites and work or family to sound off and seek some understanding, like myself here.

On Saturday we are hosts to Manchester United, well that is a god send really, because no one of sound mind and body would expect us to achieve anything.

From here on in there is only one way to follow my beloved club Reading FC, practise some of the old tried and tested methods of support using Gallows Humour, perfected by West Ham United's supporters, this is a compliment not a dig to those Hammers fans that may read this one day.

Gallows humour will reduce stress levels, lower expectations, which in turn will mean a positive approach in adversity.

The club and team including all levels of management are capable of seeing what we all see, they have tried placating the growing concerns by following social media to help pick the team, and look what that achieved at Villa Park last night.

So to those that hold Reading dear to your hearts, allow those people to do what they are capable of doing and know what they should be doing, and remember that the reason you follow your team is for the swing of feelings you have watching your team, win loose or draw. It's what keeps us alive.

My advise to the following is
      • Owners;        Put your cards on the table and share your true vision good or bad
      • Brian McD;  Be your own man and pick YOUR team
      • Players;        Leave everything you have on the pitch, give it your all
      • Supporters;  Support and enjoy the bad times as well as the good
Come the end of the season in the words of the great Steve Coppell

"We will finish where we deserved to".

But god willing we will all awake the next day and the world will still be as wondrous as the day it was before, the sun will shine and the stars will sparkle at night.

Come on you Royals

Wigan 3 - 2 Reading

Dark and gloomy at the Madstad

Never been a happy hunting ground for Reading, but the performance is far worse than the result.

After missing the first half commentary on Radio Berkshire, doing something useful, taking the dog out for a walk, it was time to tune in to the second half.

That was a big mistake, what unfolded was a huge worry. Not only did we concede a lead once more but worse we lost a game once again we were supposed to be in control of.

Live reports from Tim Dellor and Mick Gooding were very concerning, once again we blew it. After the horror first half showing against Everton I thought we had identified the problem, resolved it and were moving on, not a cat in hells chance.

Apart from a few outbursts on twitter, this is my first attempt to vent my feelings on this whole sorry saga, no need for details of who had done what wrong, who played badly etc, the whole thing is a bigger mess than most thought, the win against Everton was now irrelevant.

Today I learnt that Reading are now the bookies favourite for relegation, with Harry at QPR, somehow I do not think this makes a jot of difference to us. We are the worse team in this league.

How can the team take the blame, should not those that pick an inept team with atrocious tactics be accountable. There have been enough wake up calls already this season, true we will not be relegated until the maths says so, but even the most optimistic supporters can see the writing is on the wall, now it is only a case of when not if.

Quite honestly I have never felt so helpless watching/listening to a team representing my home town.

Will I give up on them No, but somehow the crap that is being churned out both on and off the field is an insult to peoples intelligence.

I asked a colleague at work today how many chances would his boss give him if he continued to make costly mistakes that affected our business and standing in the world, we agree one or two, so shall we say Reading FC have had their two.

Now drop all the crap of;  we have to learn; we need to move on; this game has gone; and whatever other gems are in the pipeline.

Who will draw a line in the sand and make others accountable, to be honest it must be driven from the top, others have had a chance to make a difference but not delivered, time to sharpen the axe and allow heads to roll.

If the people from the stands can see what is wrong, are others too close to see, if they are take a step back and leap forward into action.

Rant over, now going to find somewhere dark to complete my recuperation, ready to come out and watch the next episode on Sky Sports against Aston Villa.

Reading 2-1 Everton

The phrase "must win game" was seldom heard this week, cracks in the club were starting to appear. Reports be they true or false of players contracts, players not fitting in and now Brian McDermott already only warming the seat for Dick Advocaat.

The day did not have the feel of match days previous, it felt more like a dentist appointment, you had to go and you were likely to come home feeling hurt and sorry.

Taking up my seat in the Lower West, foot already hurting, caused by new boots rubbing on my heel,  my wife Sue and I had ourselves a hot drink, Hot Chocolate for her, coffee for me, regrettably no milk, but could not be bothered to return back just for a spot of the white stuff.

So the game began, notably slightly subdued, Everton were looking a confident side, we were looking apprehensive, most notably the only atmosphere being generated was from the scousers in Blue. Once again we had little to show, and Tim Howard only had a few harmless crosses to keep him warm.

As the ball dropped to McAnuff on the edge of our area his clearance was sliced sending the leather sphere into orbit, where gravity was its only saviour, no sooner had the ball arrived back on earth and it was directed by Everton into the Reading net.

Delirium from the travelling fans from Mersyside, groans from the other fans. The half got no better, and my team looked lost, out of their depth. Brian McDermott, unusually, suited and booted, was busy writing his notes,CV or resignation. Who knows? Occasionally descent was creeping in and players were starting to point and question fellow team mates.

It was a feeling of despair as the whistle went for half time, muted sounds rang out from the stands, no booing, but the silence spoke louder.

Team talks at half time were key, and as the players returned to the field, there was only ever going to be one winner, David Moyes would want his Everton team to put this game to bed.

But before my very eyes Reading were the team asking the questions, and early in the second half as the atmosphere was starting to grow, up popped Alfie to put the ball back in the net, previously used to capture the Everton first half goal, joyous celebrations rang out around the ground, game on.

The field of play now contained two teams who believed they could win this match, for a change, a draw would be welcomed today after the start we had.

Chances were a plenty now at both ends of the stadium, the atmosphere was electric, as both sets of fans could taste an opportunity for victory.

Once more the ball entered the Everton penalty area, and as Alfie controlled the ball with his chest, he was clattered from behind, all eyes turned to the man with the whistle, and as if in slow motion, as he blew his whistle, his arm raised to the horizontal position and pointed forwards towards a little pained dot in front of him, penalty.

Contested vigorously by the team all in Black, but to no avail the penalty stood, and waiting patiently was Alfie. The usual mind games were directed at Alfie from Tim Howard and his fellow teammates.

Now we had a chance, only a chance, our record of penalties of late has not been great.

As the shrill of the whistle signalled the penalty to be taken, before it fell silent the coolest person in the stadium Adam Le Fondre had struck the ball straight down the centre of the goal and into the net.

As the net bulged, the stadium absolutely erupted, joy and pandemonium a plenty, scenes of joy unequalled this season, the roof barely managing to stay on, what an unbelievable feeling, celebrations turned to joyous dancing around the stadium, it was like we had won a cup, title or the greatest trophy known to football.

The scenes were reflecting what a monumental step our season had just taken, how could a team be so poor in the first half and return to the field of play, not to dominate the game, but take their chances and the lead.

There were times after, when both teams had opportunities, the most notable was the header from Fellani which was goal bound only to strike a post and into the grateful arms of Federicci, our goalie who had in recent games been left out, but did the club proud today.

As we entered the closing stages and added time the Arsenal result was coming to the fore of my mind, we must hang on, please hang on.

Once more the stadium erupted as the game was brought to a close, the team were rightfully given a standing ovation until the last player left the field.

The whole team earned that today, and this was an immense result from a fabulous second half performance.

My Man of the Match award goes to Sean Morrison, an outstanding performance from a 21 year old central defender who left the field of play carrying his shirt in his hand and his chest as inflated as any you will have seen before.

Make no mistake this was a game of two halves and we should never been given the opportunity, but not only was it given, it was taken with interest, Reading were back, we now proved that we can compete, given some luck and the rub of the green who knows.

Today was about the team, squad, Management and all about the support staff, they turned it around, responded to a half time team talk, and delivered an inspired performance.

Reading fans can be fickle, but today they stayed with the team, a team that could have been booed off at half time. All those of Blue and White hoops persuasion crossed the line together and witnessed a fantastic result, and celebrated as one.

To put this result into context, Everton entered this game with only one defeat in twenty games, they leave Berkshire with the Royals celebrating, so loudly ringing in their ears.

No offence to Everton, have no problem with them or their followers, a much respected club, but today was ours, we not only needed this win, we bloody well earned it.

Urzz

P.s. my heel was as sore as ever as we returned to the car in a side road off Hartland Road, but it did not matter, the Royals have won. :-)

Oh dear, oh dear oh dear

I was looking forward to celebrating and charting the success of Readingfc return to the top flight of football.

To say it has been a disappointment so far is an understatement. Ten games into the season and yet to win a game is bad enough, but to celebrate not conceding against a poor looking Norwich City, is taking the wee wee.

No longer can I suffer in silence. The whole campaign thus far has failed to deliver apart from one glimmer of hope, unlucky to get only a draw against Newcastle United.

Tactics and formations are for cleverer people than me, but as a fan of my home town club, who I have supported since the late sixties, what they are doing ain't working.

The club try hard, but I have only witnessed true progress at the club when Steve Coppell brought respectability from within the football world, sadly that hit a brick wall, due to the clubs lack of ambition. When they were last promoted not only did those involved with the club celebrate, but we were welcomed with open arms as a breath of fresh air. Sadly that is now but a memory.

Playing in the Premiership is not the be all and end all, but if your club want success this is the only place it will be measured. It is a mixed bag at the moment, though it is good to see the stadium nearly full each game, those games are fewer and each one is a must win game.

Leaving the ground yesterday felt even worse than the collapse against Arsenal.

So my plea is thus.

Sort yourselves out Reading F C

If we are going to get relegated go down with a fight not a whimper.

Sunderland P-P Reading

Due to a waterlogged pitch, this game was postponed with less than 2 hours before kick off.

No winners here in anyway shape or form.

The Royals will have to remake this trip another day, the players, fans and teams of both clubs will be gutted.

Chelsea 4 - 2 Reading

Attendance 41,733

Reading played their first away fixture in the Barclay's Premier League at Stamford Bridge last night.

The cost for a ticket was £47.00; So although an easy ground to get to, I decided to listen to this one on the local BBC radio; Radio Berkshire with Tim Dellor and Mick Gooding.

It was a packed midfield for Reading and early doors were under the cosh a bit, but the first blood was to Chelsea, a penalty was conceded and duly netted, 1-0

Fearing the floodgates would open up it was a shock to hear Reading not only equalise but take the lead 1-2 to the visitors, and Reading were playing a good game, going into the end of the first half one goal better than the Champions of Europe.

Tim Dellor was waxing lyrical about how this is the greatest game in Reading's history and as it stood Reading FC were top of the English Premier League.

The second half we heard Chelsea were finding it difficult to break down Reading and when they did the goalie was not being troubled. Pearce was only an inch away from heading in a cross which would have made it three to the Royals.

Cahill picked up the ball in his own half moved forward and with a tame shot from 35 yards Federici was beaten, he failed to deal with the ball, 2 a piece. It sounded like Federici had made a bad error for the second game on the trot. Chelsea know how to sense a change and went for it.

Torres struck with a goal that was clearly offside, this was not to be a great result for Reading.

Pushing hard to respond Reading went into added time and up went Federici, into the Chelsea box, and the result was a breakaway from Chelsea with no goalie to beat Ivanovic slotted into an empty net 4-2. The Royals were beaten and the final whistle ended their misery.

On a personal note Federici should not have gambled going for the equaliser, but I fully understood how he wanted to right a wrong, unfortunately the gamble didn't pay off. He is a good goalie but this form is reminiscent of a couple of years ago. He needs to get over it and return to what he is capable of achieving his team mates, the club and the fans want him to succeed, he must get to the bottom of what is behind these errors and resolve it. This league shows no forgiveness and those errors could become expodential.

Federici did not make the biggest mistake of the night, that honour goes to the lino and his fellow officials for allowing an offside goal to stand. (Torres)

Feds, you need to sought yourself out for Sunderland, the spotlight is on you now, other clubs will be playing to your weakness. Learn and become a great goalie, the support is still there for you but failure is not an option, as it is the same for all of us.

Well done Reading FC and fans, you gave it a good go.

Chelsea used up a large slice of luck and good fortune last night, ours will come another day.

Reading 1-1 Stoke City

We made it to the Madstad to watch the first match of the season.

As with all first home league games there was a buzz in the air, which was building to a crescendo before kick off. As we left the concourse to take up our seats we entered a cauldron of noise to the sounds of "The Big Bad Wolf" Howwwwllllllllll.

The players were going through their warm up routine, this was going to be a special atmosphere today, no pressure on the club or players then.

The players left the pitch and it was time to give it the final preparation with the sprinklers going

The newest member to the Royal Family was introduced , Kingsly our mascot had got his self a wife, time for her to take a bow in front of her loyal Royal subjects.

(Apologies for link but for unknown reason image could not be uploaded.)

As the build up continued the noise generated in the stadium was getting louder and louder. This was also due to the very vocal support from Stoke City fans. Delila was going to get a good airing today.

The impossible dream played out across the tannoy and big screen with thunderous roar of Urzzzz at the end by the home faithful.

With the new banner now passing through the East stand on its home leg we were about to begin our first match in the Premiership this season.

The Match

Kevin Friend the match referee got the match underway, with Reading attacking the South stand, split in half for the travelling away fans, the moment had arrived.

Reading were clearly going for an early strike, with a lot of pressure the Stoke defence held a strong defence. Our new striker The Pog, failed to cause the defence too many problems, but it remained pretty much all one way traffic, Stoke barely getting out of their half.

Stoke weathered the onslaught, with Reading making good use of both wings and controlled possession. The fans were enjoying the raucous banter with the travelling Stoke faithful in the blazing hot sunshine.

Dave Kitson, What a bargain, what a bargain; Sonko is Superman; rang out from the Reading faithful mocking the Stoke supporter's at the money they had spent on Reading hero's from the past, that delivered nothing for their time at Stoke.

Finally late in the first half Stoke showed a bit more of what they could do, after a free kick narrowly passing the stranded Federici, they began to take control with their own passing game. Jonathan Walters was very impressive, a good honest hard working striker. Then the inevitable, after all the possession we were suddenly one nil down when a low deflected shot was resting in the back of the net, how, Federici had plenty of time went down early, what had been festering in my mind was now a reality. Possession and pressure means zilch, if the other team put the ball in the net. The fans were stunned, the team were stunned, welcome to the Premiership.

Now there was more of a critical eye watching the match, our goalie had made an error, our new big Russian forward Pavel Pogrebnyak, was making no impression. Leigertwood was loosing possession too easily, thankfully half time came and we would have a chance for the Manager Brian McDermott and his team to sort themselves out.

Second Half

The Royals were out early to a warm reception, could we do Stoke like Boro on our first ever Premier league fixture.
Sadly it didn't look too promising, Stoke were making all the moves and asking the questions of the Reading defence, we continued to pump the ball up to the Pog, but if he won little in the first half, he was winning even less this half, Huth and Shawcross make an impressive defence duo, now with a goal to the good, Stoke were in control and happy for Reading to try to break down the two banks of four.

McCleary was sent on for Kanu-Robson, and Pogreynabak was replaced by hunt with less than twenty to go, Stoke sensed a change and began to control the match slowing the pace right down, injuries were taking an eternity to deal with, substitutes made at a pace even slower than the time it took to take the highly technical skill of throwing the ball in, Reading had less than five minutes to get something from the game, McCleary was the danger man he was unsettling Stoke at the back with his pace. Yellow cards were being brandished like confetti for the deliberate time wasting, Reading were being taught a harsh lesson on how to win a game in the Premiership.

A shot went just over the bar from an Ian Hart free kick, more and more free kicks were being awarded for fouls on the Reading players. Then with trickery and driving forward at pace once again Reading player is brought down in the box, the ref gives nothing and Noel Hunts shot is tipped over the bar. Penalty, the ref had decided no advantage had been gained, and the player was brought down unfairly.
90 minutes on the clock and up stepped Adam Le Fondre; The stadium goes ecstatic, goallllllllllllllllll.

Alfie strikes again with an impressive dead ball kick, one of only a few players to have scored in every league in the English game.

Reading are back on level terms, and in the final minutes went in search for a winner, but it was to end all square. Both sides will feel this was a game they could have and should have won.

The never say die attitude at Reading is why we were promoted to this league, this will be what will maintain our Premiership status.

Individuals could have played better, some could have made fewer mistakes, but this is football and this is why we love to follow Reading FC

The Football season has arrived

Today we play our first game of the season in the world renowned top flight of the English Premier League.

Our first match is at home to Stoke City at the Madstad, and the weather is currently bright and sunny.

The lure of the premiership has not had such an impact on me this time around, may be due to being a couple of years older than last time we graced the top flight, or even the reality is that football now is too far removed from the fans, they are merely punters who are there for the taking.

My view is slightly cynical because I am a football fan who grew up on the terraces of Elm Park, and like others alike have got embroiled in money is the great diving force. Really how do you compete with the big spenders who operate on debts and losses, few other businesses in this world could survive, excluding banks.

So the season begins in just over 5hrs, and my cynical side will give way to my passion to follow the great Reading F C

My new ticket yet unused, time to pass through the turnstiles with the magic of a card reader, to take my place in the lower West, with a smile on my face and an eagerness to see the beloved Royals take on the Potters, Stoke City FC.

If the match is half as exciting as our inaugural Premiership match at home to Middlesbrough FC then we will be in for a cracker.

The Madstad is a  great stadium and even more so when the seats are full of fans decked out in Blue and White roaring for the Royals and a cry of Urzzzzzzzzzzz.

The media is so great for teams in the Premiership, there are no shortages of feeding the fans all the latest news and gossip.

There will be changes today, both on and off the pitch, and look forward to a great day out, a local lad watching his local side rubbing shoulders and competing with England's finest teams.

There are no rituals to feed, superstition plays a lesser part of my life now, what will be will be, we will end up where we deserve to be.

Last year that was top of the Championship, the best team in the division despite what Saints and 'ammers fans might think.

We enjoyed the celebrations and the memories, lets make some more

Who shall we sign or not sign

Here are players muted to be of interest or rumoured of interst to the Royals and that for my reasons I would like / not like to see signed

  • Nicky Shorey (Felt that with his England call-up had his head turned in the wrong way, sought to join his beloved 'ammers, when that didn't happen the toys come out of the pram. Great player, up to that point but all water under the bridge now, he moved on so should we) My Rating to join 2/10

  • Andy Johnson (One of the most irritating strikers I have ever had the misfortune to watch, you always give the opposition strikers grief, but when we playing at Selhurst Park against the Palace, he toe poked a ball pass Hahnenann, absolutely no chance of getting on the end of it, and with the faintest touch from a piece of stray cotton dangling loose from his outstretched glove, he was fortunate to walk ever again, can't remember what he did with the penalty, the red mist had descended and all I could chant was cheat, cheat cheat). My Rating to join 0/10

  • Kevin Doyle (A great striker who developed a reputation in the football world, felt he should have gone to Everton when he had the chance, unfortunately does not have anything to prove by returning to the Madstad, and on this occasion reluctantly agree with Kevin, he had four great years at the club. No real reason to return) My Rating 10/10 But no return is likely

  • Emile Heskey (Not sure how he has made a living out of falling over. Not worth the wages even if a free transfer) My Rating to join 0/10

  • Gylfi Sigurdson (Took the premier league by storm last year, Reading FC have always known that he had the quality of a top player, worth breaking the wage structure for, may be difficult with Brendan Rodgers in the hot seat at Liverpool, if we could tempt him back that would be one hell of an asset) My Rating to join 5/10

  • Adrian Mariappa (Heard good things about this player, with the £2m bid turned down, it is up to the club to decide how much they want him, up the ante or move on, based on the news coverage, Reading should put a firm serious alternative bid on the table, if it is not accepted, move on). My Rating to join 8/10
